Rob Kohl

Robert W. Kohl – 1971 to Present

Rob’s passion for scuba diving dates back to his early childhood.
Rob’s father, Richard Kohl, owned and operated Kohl's Dive Shop, a successful dive center located in Helena, Montana (1980-1987). Richard was the lead Search Coordinator for the Lewis and Clark County Search and Rescue and a PADI Instructor who trained hundreds of individuals how to scuba dive. As a young boy, Rob remembers following his father’s air bubbles along the lakes’ shoreline, looking forward to the day that he would join his dad in the water. Rob grew up working by his father’s side and his dads’ passion quickly became one of his own.

In 1982 Rob began diving with his dad, and was certified as a PADI Open Water Diver in August of 1984, at the age of 13 (the earliest age possible at that time). Rob grew up in Montana, scuba diving the Missouri River and countless glacier-fed freshwater lakes, including Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River.

Tragically, Richard Kohl lost his life during a submerged vehicle recovery attempt under ice in 1987. Only 16-years-old at the time of his father’s death, Rob held on to the passion for diving that he and his father shared for so many years. Dedicated to making his father proud, Rob set out to live boldly and with devotion to the memory of his dad and the principles learned at his father’s side. These principals remain the driving force behind Rob’s diving career.

Upon graduating from high school in 1989, Rob went on to attend the Diver's Institute of Technology in Seattle, Washington. Graduating at the top of his class, Rob trained in underwater welding; surface supplied mixed gas diving; pipeline support; decompression chamber operations and more. Two weeks after receiving his diploma as a commercial diver, having just turned 19, Rob was hired by Sub Sea International in April, 1990, and relocated to Louisiana. Beginning as a dive tender, Rob earned the Grade 3 diver ranking at age 21.

Rob achieved Saturation Bell diving at the early age of 22 during a job with Shell Oil removing one of Shell’s last remaining One-Atmosphere-Subsea-Wellheads in the Gulf of Mexico. In 1995, Rob was hired by Global Industries where he earned the industry’s highest dive ranking, Grade 1 Diver. During his 10 year commercial diving career, Rob amassed hundreds of days in Saturation Bell Diving; countless hours of time simply decompressing; three hardcover dive logbooks of recorded dives with the last book dedicated to only dives beyond a hundred feet and other oddity dives such as setting 140lbs of explosive charges in a “coke bottle neck” like caisson.

Rob’s personal depth record of 720' took place in the Gulf of Mexico while providing dive support for Shell Oil at the base of their then Spirit Platform, which is also where he remained under pressure, in Saturation, for his record, a total of 44 days straight prior to resurfacing. In March, 2000, Rob got out of commercial diving at the top of his career having achieved everything he had set out to accomplish in the commercial diving industry.

In November, 2000, Rob turned his focus toward the recreational scuba diving industry and attended a PADI Instructor Development Course earning his PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification and started down the path of the last 17 years as a PADI professional. Hired by former Navy SEAL, Garrett Schwing, in October, 2000, Rob took on the role as the primary scuba instructor for Seal Sports upon its inception. Rob went on to acquire Seal Sports in July, 2004 and has been the owner/operator since that time.

Since that time, Seal Sports has grown from a small PADI Dive Center to a PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Center, offering everything for Scuba Diving, Kayaking, Paddleboarding and Swimming. Rob has been involved with the training of over one thousand scuba divers throughout Louisiana and the country. Rob’s last count was over four thousand dives. His continued professionalism, thoroughness, and dedication to safety have earned Rob Kohl and Seal Sports strong customer loyalty.

Realizing that he needed a vehicle to help facilitate diving and diver training, Rob started Easy Diver Charters, L.L.C. in early 2007 and in September, 2007, Rob earned his United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential as a licensed captain. Serving as Captain of the M/V Easy Diver, Rob provides dive training and dive opportunities on famous dives off the Gulf Coast, such as the United States Aircraft Carrier, the U.S.S. Oriskany.

Rob is now heavily involved in the pioneering future of the dive industry: state-of-the-art technology Rebreather Diving. He believes this technology to be the future of diving for both recreational and technical diving and has now made rebreather diving available through Seal Sports. He is also a PADI Course Director, the highest and most respected professional rating in recreational scuba diving.

Rob has been living on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain for the past 27 years, where he resides in Mandeville, Louisiana.
