  • Welcome Back Cozumel Dive Group!

Cozumel Dive GroupDive Instructor Joel Luker led a lively group of 12 Seal Sports divers on a post-Memorial Day trip to Cozumel!  Many of the sun-baked and Ocean-calmed group were able to join us on June 6th at our monthly Diving After Hours social, where we viewed Go-Pro video footage of their underwater adventures.

Trip Report: "Never long enough!"  The weather was perfect, night diving amazing, plentiful sea-life, hilarious on-board Salsa dancing lessons, and good friendships enjoyed.  Great memories made by all!

When's the next dive trip?  We have a variety of scuba-travel opportunities coming up:

    • September 27th-October 3rd, 2014: Bahama Sailing Trip leaving directly from Miami

  • PADI Rescue Diver Course - Seal Sports Mandeville, Louisiana

rescuediverThe PADI Rescue Diver Course is known to be both challenging and confidence-building for divers who have completed their Advanced Open Water Diver certification. Though rigorous, many divers also say that this is one of the most fun and enjoyable courses.

The course is designed to enable you to identify and react to diver problems and diving emergencies should they occur. By the end of this course you will be a far more proficient and confident diver. The PADI Rescue Diver course develops your knowledge and skills so you can effectively perform diver assists and rescues, manage diving accident situations and render first aid.

During this course you will encounter realistic rescue scenarios, and you will learn how to effectively manage these situations. You will become competent in the most important rescue skill of all: anticipation and prevention of problems. The rescue diver course also covers emergency preparedness. An emergency can be as simple as a leg cramp, or as significant as a missing diver. Through study and in-water role-playing, you'll learn how to respond to a variety of emergency situations.

The Rescue Diver course has several components:

    • Self Rescue Skills. You will review the self rescue skills learned in your Open Water Diver course.
    • Recognizing and Managing Stress in Other Divers
    • Emergency management and equipment
    • Rescuing panicked divers both underwater and on the surface
    • Rescuing unresponsive divers both underwater and on the surface
    • Knowledge Development
    • Confined Water Dives
    • Open Water Dives (local, no need to travel)

Prior to the course, you must have current CPR and first aid certification (completed within the last two years).

For more information or to register contact Seal Sports at 985.674.3088 or visit our calendar to find the next course.

  • Jon Atwater Fundraiser - To Make a Difference

In September 2013 a mentor of mine, Mark Divine, e-mailed me “Courage Doesn't Always Roar” his account of Jon Atwater’s heroic battle to overcome paralysis for the second time.

I read Marks email just minutes after meeting with a man with similar challenges to start him on the journey to scuba diving.  That man and his family are now good friends, and the experience has touched everyone involved in an uplifting and positive manner. We were honored to have been apart of it.

Likewise, as I've followed Jon Atwater's journey over the last few months, I found myself quietly cheering him on and wishing there was more I could do. His determination and courage to recover and move forward in life after a devastating injury, has inspired and deeply resonated with me.

Today, thanks to his family, friends and teammates, there is a unique opportunity to encourage, support and cheer-on this inspiring man. The SEALFIT: Jon Atwater Fundraiser Auction is online now.  Through our dive-charter company,  Easy Diver Charters, I've donated a 6-Person, 2-Day Dive Package which includes: Continue reading

  • Enriched Air - Diving with Nitrox

Extend Dive TImes Well known as PADI's most popular specialty course, it is still common for new divers to wonder what are the advantages to scuba diving with enriched air nitrox?  The simple answer is that in most cases a diver can stay down longer, and experience shorter surface intervals using enriched air.  For those reasons alone, Enriched Air Diver is often the first specialty course taken by new divers.  However, there are several other benefits to diving with enriched air nitrox.

    1. More Time to Explore: It's why we dive!  Longer bottom times are possible because  the reduced percentage of nitrogen in enriched air nitrox allows divers to extend their no-decompression limits (dive time) by reducing nitrogen absorption. Recreational enriched air nitrox (21-40% oxygen) contains a lower percentage of nitrogen than air.

  • Mastering Scuba Diving: More than Just Open Water Certification

Do you remember when you attended your first scuba lesson?  Then taking your first breath off a scuba regulator during your first pool session?  How about your first open water certification dive?  What did you feel?  Was it Uncertainty?  Apprehension?  Anxiety?  Excitement?

Now, remember that feeling when you completed your final open water training dive.  What emotions were you feeling then?  Exhilaration?  Satisfaction?  Accomplished?  Pride? Master Scuba Diving CourseLooking back, you had made tremendous strides in that period of time, from your first day of scuba lessons, and you should feel pride.  You were finally an Open Water Certified Diver.

So, what comes next?  Was getting “certified” your goal?  Or was becoming a good scuba diver your goal?

In scuba diving, Open Water Diver is equivalent to earning a White Belt in karate. A diver now has some basic knowledge and skills, and has taken the first step of the much longer journey that will lead to the ‘Black Belt’ of diving: Master Scuba Diver.

  • Rebreather Diving

Rebreather Diving EntryWith my fin tips hanging over the boat’s edge, I complete my final check, firmly hold my mask in place, and take a giant stride, plunging into the ocean. Senses heightened, I feel the temperate tropical waters surround me and the initial splash of water gives way to a silent world of blue. I drift slowly, descending through the water, pretending I’m free falling from the sky, but at a slow-motion speed until I come to rest on the beach-like sandy bottom.

Looking around I see little mounds of white, fine sand, home to some fish or creature,  while dozens of garden eels peak their heads out of hiding, swaying like seagrass as far as the eye can see.  I’m soon surrounded by a school of hundreds of horse-eye jacks shimmering silver in the Sun’s penetrating rays. Fish pass within inches of me… Continue reading
